The Importance in Defining a Problem

Define is the next important process when it comes to design thinking. This is because it’s about focusing and reframing from the question. According to “How Reframing a Problem Unlocks Innovation”, the key is to ask what needs to be done or added to get to the final solution. This eliminates the solution from being a single solved problem to one that could have many different types of solutions and remedies. For example, when one is presented with a problem many different factors such as a person’s age, their life experiences, and their location are introduced which requires all possible solutions to be looked at from all angels.

Many times the question of “how might we” is asked before one can begin problem solving and conducting research. I noticed that this technique was frequently used during our readings.

According to the article “What is Problem Framing in Design” the next step is to then come up with statements such as: I heard, I felt, and I wonder. It quintessential that the designer puts themselves in the users shoes to identify problems that may arise. It is also important because these products will ultimately be used by many people and having an issue with either the interface or programming would be detrimental.

Once the problem is identified, the designer than needs to discover which problem will affect the user in a positive way. This is important because this plays a role of the final step which includes the following  “How might we…” statements. By doing so, final conclusions are developed in order to solve a specific problem.

An article written by Christian Reuter titled, “Writing Effective Problem Statements” describes the specific characteristics each statement should contain. The first and most important rule is that there should be no limitations so that the most creative and innovative solutions can be found. Secondly, all statements should be actionable meaning that verbs should be used to imply a change for the better. In addition, statements that are specific work better because they offer clearer messages that could result in more possibilities. Essentially the outcome should be one that is both beneficial while also helping to solve or fix a problem.
