My First GIF

batting-swing

I had seen many gifs before online so I knew what they were. I also created some very beginner ones using video footage I had taken. I did this using an app on my phone so the entire creative process was entirely different. My drawing skills were definitely not adequate enough to draw detailed sketches. In it’s place I looked at many pictures online as well as Pinterest for some inspiration and found many examples that I liked.

Due to the fact that this would be my first real GIF, I wanted to start off with something fairly simple. I immediately thought of something sports related. As I was looking for images in baseball, a sequence shot of a baseball player swinging showed up. I knew right away that’s what I wanted to try and do. I began by saving the image and tracing each outline of the player in Adobe Illustrator. I had used this program before but it had been a couple years since I’ve used it. It took me a little while to remember how to do things but at the end of this process I think I am actually a lot better then I was back when I first started using it.

The next step was to then compile each image in photoshop and arrange them in the correct order. Thankfully there was a video on Youtube that helped me with the animation process. I was able to use information that was taught in class in order to choose the right setting when it came to exporting the GIF to the web. The first one I had exported had the player swinging too fast so I went back into Photoshop and added some more time between each frame which fixed the problem.

Overall, I really enjoyed this first project and am happy with how my first GIF came out. Going forward I will try to create more GIFs because I really enjoy the process as well as  the final outcome
