John Rankin Waddell or Rankin isa British fashion or portrait photographer as well as director. He has directed multiple music videos. Rankin is also the founder of the Dazed and Confused Magazine. He has recently worked with Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Emporio Armani, and Prada. His work has appeared in magazine like GQ and Vogue.
Based off of what I have seen I believe that Rankin does interact with the subjects he is shooting. Because he has experience as a director this probably also comes into play when he is shooting– whether that is giving instruction or direction to the other creatives. I would not be surprised if his shoots with car companies require more direction than when he is just photographing a person. I realize there are always exceptions to this as shoots with people can also be very technical.
As with most fashion or ad photography, Rankin’s photos capture the drama and fine details. This can be seen in both his photoshoots for Rolls Royce and Aston Martin. His more journalistic photos still capture drama but they solely focus on the person and what they are wearing. He also does a lot of black and white photography which also adds to to the drama aspect.
